5 Simple Habits That Keep Kids' Smiles Healthy

Good oral hygiene habits start early. Here's how parents can help kids build a lifelong routine for healthy teeth — and keep those smiles bright along the way.

A child's smile says a lot — and building healthy habits early is the best way to keep it that way. Whether you're just starting brushing routines with a toddler or navigating the tricky teenage years, these five tips can help set your child up for a lifetime of good oral health.

1. Start Brushing Before the First Tooth Arrives

Even before teeth come in, gently wiping your baby's gums with a soft cloth helps remove bacteria and gets them used to the sensation of oral care. Once the first tooth appears, switch to a soft, small-bristled toothbrush with a rice-grain-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste.

2. Make Brushing a Two-Minute, Twice-a-Day Habit

Kids often rush through brushing — or skip spots entirely. Try using a timer, a fun song, or an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer to make sure they're brushing for the full two minutes, morning and night.

3. Don't Skip Flossing

As soon as two teeth touch, it's time to start flossing. Floss picks designed for kids can make this step easier and less intimidating than traditional floss.

4. Watch the Sugary Snacks (and Drinks)

Frequent snacking on sugary or starchy foods gives cavity-causing bacteria more opportunities to thrive. Try to limit sugary drinks and treats to mealtimes, and encourage water as the go-to drink between meals.

5. Keep Up with Regular Dental Visits

Routine checkups let us catch small issues before they become bigger problems, apply protective treatments like fluoride varnish or sealants, and help kids feel comfortable in the dental chair from an early age.

What About Whitening for Kids?

We're often asked whether whitening treatments are safe for children. In general, cosmetic whitening isn't recommended until all permanent teeth have come in and enamel has fully matured — usually mid-to-late teens. For younger kids, the best way to keep smiles bright is simply sticking to a consistent hygiene routine and limiting stain-causing foods and drinks.
